So Today I watched cartoon's with my brother's kids and I was fascinated when we pulled up Netflix (Thank you April...) and they wanted to watch Inspector Gadget and not the Wiggles.
And that well it got me thinking I had some good entertainment growing up!!
And ....
Have you ever wondered which cartoon characters' from then could kick today's cartoon butt?
I have to say these new cartoons and TV show for kids don't got nothing on the good ol' stuff I was brought up on.
Can I get an amen?
For real though... If you have kids and are subject to Dora and Barney and The Wiggles, I am so sorry!! I am ashamed to admit even the older kids' stuff like suite life, avatar, and Fairly odd parents,Mighty B's... is just kinda hard to watch.
Where do people come up with these shows? Are the writer's all like 18? Did they never watch "Real Cartoons".... your only saving grace is that now some Movies for kids do have stuff written in for the adults!!
But they Just don't make good entertainment in children's TV shows anymore.
It would be a sad, sad thing to have to grow up now... I remember when Saturday Morning Cartoons were a part, neigh they were a ritual, of a young child's weekly routine!!
And I do have to admit it was probably the only time I did not complain or argue with my mother to get up before noon on a day off from school.
I would get up in time to be sure to see Jem...
I for some reason Loved that show and looking back it was a perhaps a little too old for me.
Did anybody else catch the episode where Jem kissed her boyfriend RIO. (I do mean the actual episode because it was also a part of the opening... Good Stuff!!)
This cartoon is more than likely the cause for my infatuation for boys with longer hair and blue hair.
I like blue hair. I haven't yet met a boy with actual blue hair but when I do if he is Mormon and if it is long and if he is single and working and over 25 and...OK OK I'm just joking, but if I do find some guy who would be willing to dye his hair for my Jem situation, I would more than likely marry that boy!!
Jem WAS excitement!!
Following Jem you had the Snorks...good stuff even if it was a cheep knock off of smurfs under water. I loved the smurfs!!
I just could never figure out why there was only one girl...Hmmm?
And then Punky Brewster. Does anybody but me remember the Punky cartoon?
Most of my fashion sense came from Soleil Moon. She was a genius, and I have to say I do believe that she was ahead of her time... not only did she miss match her socks but also her shoes...which was sheer brilliance!! You double your footwear when you take on the Brewster wardrobe challenge...and who honestly can say that they have enough foot ware?

Yes my friends you can look at me even now and still find some of Punky and Rainbow Brite...My fashion sense came from both of them. Man anybody who can wear every color of the rainbow two different shoes and ride on a huge white horse and not look stupid is AMAZAZING!!
Infact I think I wore my hair in a side pony for like months that and those multi-colored leg warmers all to be more like Rainbow Brite and Punky.
But I am so glad that they didn't have digital camera's back then.
I also loved Strawberry shortcake it always seemed to be on after rainbow brite colors and foods the perfect pair in real life and on tv.
Who doesn't like a show about kids who smell like their fav. desserts though? Her cat was precious and all the kids had pets who smelled just as good as they did. Too bad they didn't depict that a little truer to life. I may not want a dog so badly even now if this show had a little side kick that smelled like actual crap in stead of raspberry pie, shortcake or lemon candies?
Care Bears and Care a lot Cousins were on next. I think that the Mother (actual mother I am writing about cartoons guys, geesh) who came up with this cartoon probably had some children with some real anger and hitting issues cause I don't remember a single episode that didn't have something about "I love you" and "take care" and "don't be mean" in it
... Its like Prozac in liquid cartoon form. Which is good I never wanted to hit or bit or say mean things to anybody after watching this show. That and I always had a overwhelming urge to hug somebody. Go figure?!
Spider man Superman and Batman definitely staples no need to go any further as I do believe they have endured and would be found on your cartoon lineup today.
But whatever happened to He-Man, Shera, Thunder cats, GI Joe, and Mr T?
Listen Up Fool!! You ain't watched any good cartoons if there isn't a clad-ly dressed superhero...
I don't believe any superhero's from the 80's at least none listed above owned any shirts?
Maybe Shera, but I don't think she ever wore it either?
Next came Kid Vid...Nothing like our generation.
You don't like to exercise? No worries we will invent the Nitendo and Sega.
And playing like 40 hours of video games a week so that your complexion turns 3 shades lighter isn't enough for you, let me introduce the cartoon to give your thumbs a little brake... Kid Vid!!
He does all the work you just sit back and watch for the next 30 minutes or so. Gotta love that he kicks some video butt in every episode too!!
I loved the Little's, Where it didn't matter how big you were you could still do big stuff.
Man that show was written for me. It gave me hope that even if I didn't hit 5 feet it would still be OK!! That and it just always seemed so cool when they wrote out notes with that giant pencil...
I always wanted me a giant pencil....A boyfriend with blue hair and a giant pencil....
Of course it wouldn't be Saturday morning with out Jim. Muppet babies (because grown up Muppet's were for babies...goodbye sesame st, Hello baby Kermit.)
Fraggle Rock ...I really, really did leave my worries for another day when watching this favorite show ( I own the series on DVD!!)
and Pryor's Place...I learned the sax because of that show!! (it came on right after dungeons and dragon's)
And then came on the Wuzzles and Adventures of the Gummi bears followed by Chip and Dales Rescue Rangers and don't forget Duck tales and Tale Spin.
All of which helped Zach and Grahm in debate and History so much more than our Amazing Teachers at Adna Middle/High School.
I always knew that Disney was sneaky trying to pour education in what should be a brainless Saturday activity!!
There was Karate Kid and Alf and Hulk Hogan's Rocking Wrestling cause you just couldn't get enough of the real versions.
My little ponies and Pound Puppies, Scoobie Doo and Scrappy too.
Transformers and X-Men. Pink Panther and sons, Looney toons when they were kids...
and those weird little black dog/rodent guys. Geesh what was the name of that show I can't remember, but Pinky and the Brain got their own episodes because they were on it...
and I remember it cause the song about the capital's of the world helped out later in life. Oh and it was a crack up when he burped a song about what now I can't remember.
Simpson's which dad would watch with us when mom wasn't looking, and which also died in our house the day she finally sat down and did watch it...but now I'm just rambling cause I think it was on on Sunday night and not Saturday morning....
Anyway the point of this blog is that I watched way too much TV as a kid, but only cause it was better than most of the stuff that is on now.
That and the fact that I was impressed that My brother's kids would know good TV when they saw it....
